Vogue magazine....hq in NY NY USA. mentioned by Mrs. Slocombe in Cold Store....

"United we Stand, Divided we fall" in Coffee Morning.... by Mr. Grainger... I've always thought that as American....
Googling it describes it as ... Well heck, here's the text!

From Google:

Most historians believe that the patriotism of Kentucky's first governor, Isaac Shelby, was the inspiration for the state's choice of the motto "United We Stand, Divided We Fall." Shelby, a hero of the Revolutionary War for his victory at the Battle of Kings Mountain, was fond of "The Liberty Song," written 1768 by John Dickinson. The chorus of song includes: "They join in hand, brave Americans all, By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall." Another song that was popular at the time was "The Flag of Our Union," written by George Pope Morris, that also contained a similar line: "United We Stand, Divided We Fall."

But most historians believe the phrase "United we stand, divided we fall" is first attributed to John Dickinson (1732?1808) a US Statesman and essayist. Boston Gazette (July 18, 1768) The Liberty Song (1768) he wrote: "Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all! By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall!" quoted in The Writings of John Dickinson, vol. 1 (1895).

In Wedding Bells, one of the "naughty knickers" quotes is "I love Elvis"

Marie Celeste by Mr. Humphries

Marie Celeste
The Mary Celeste was found abandoned at sea in 1872. The crew disappeared without a trace, leaving no indication as to why they left the ship. The disappearance of the crew from an undamaged ship remains one of the most famous maritime mysteries. The disappearance is sometimes linked to the Bermuda Triangle, although the ship was no where near that area when found.

Why would this be an Americanism? This event was popularized by Conan Doyle.
Here is a link to the real story. http://www.maryceleste.net/part2.htm

The Mary Celeste .......text cut by frankdicer.....

Why would this be an Americanism? This event was popularized by Conan Doyle.
Here is a link to the real story. http://www.maryceleste.net/part2.htm

And the Titanic was a great American Movie though the ship was British!

Well because ships are registered with a Port of origin, hence country of origin, ( and it was NY)
I think it is. Although some might think Canadian because it was built there, but you would not think the Statue of Liberty was French now would you, just because it was built there!

I'm sorry if this post sounds a little snippy...I looked up the Port of Origin
for the Marie Celeste before making my post. BTW, I did look at that
particular website as well.

Text Copied and Pasted from the website you reference:
The ship was the 'Mary Celeste' of New York, a Canadian built 100 foot brigantine of 282 tons registered in New York.
End of Paste.

Brother Can you Spare a Dime? song....

"Once I built a railroad, made it run.....Brother (or somtimes buddy) can you spare a dime?"

Quote from website:
http://msdlib.home.nyu.edu/dram/note.cgi?id=4194 (found after googling on
"Brother can you spare a dime...and Once I built a Railroad")

Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? is a genuine rarity, a Tin Pan Alley song written during the Depression that speaks directly to the facts of life of this difficult time. .......The song was introduced in the Broadway musical Americana, which opened on October 5, 1932, and ran for seventy-seven performances,

Although people like Stan Laurel and Cary Grant and
Errol Flynn were English or born in the commonwealth, they were indeed
American Film stars. I'm not meaning to take anything away from their citizenry, only that
their work was done in and for america (at least part of the time).
I guess the question to be answered is, would they have been household
names in England if they weren't making films in America? I.E. does America have a claim on their fame. If so, then (I think) they fit the criteria for this thread. (you, of course, are free to disagree )

The Night Club:

Night and Day -- Cole Porter/Frank Sinatra etc.
Night and day
You are the one
Only you 'neath the moon
Or under the sun
Whether near to me
Or far, it's no matter,
Darling where you are
I think of you

Day and night
Night and day
Why is it so
That this longing for you
Follows wherever I go
In the roaring traffic's boom
In the silence of my lonely room

Whatever Lola Wants -- from the movie Damn Yankees

Sarah Vaughan

Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets
And little man, little Lola wants you
Make up your mind to have
(Make up you mind to have)
No regrets (no regrets)
Recline yourself
Resign yourself, you're through

I always get, what I aim for
And your heart and soul
Is what I came for

Whatever Lola wants (Lola wants)
Lola gets (Lola gets)
Take off your coat
Don't you know you can't win
You're no exception to the rule
I'm irresistible you fool .. give in
(Give in, you'll never win)

Whatever Lola wants
Lola gets

---- Instrumental Interlude ----

I always get, what I aim for
And your heart and soul
Is what I came for

Whatever Lola wants (Lola wants)
Lola gets (Lola gets)
Take off your coat
Don't you know, you can't win

You're no exception to the rule
I'm irresistible you fool ... give in
(Give in, you'll never win)

Give in (give in, you'll never win)
Give in (give in, you'll never win)

Mr. Rumbold starts to sing a song after arguing w/ Peacock....
These Foolish Things

A cigarette that bears a lipstick?s traces,
An airline ticket to romantic places,
And still my heart has wings...
These foolish things remind me of you.

A tinkling piano in the next apartment,
Those stumbling words that told you what my heart meant,
A fairground?s painted swings...
These foolish things remind me of you.

You came, you saw,
You conquered me.
When you did that to me,
I knew somehow this had to be.

The winds of march that made my heart a dancer,
A telephone that rings,
And who?s to answer?
Oh, how the ghost of you clings...
These foolish things remind me of you.

The first daffodil and long excited cables,
And candle lights on little corner tables,
And still my heart has wings...
These foolish things remind me of you.

The park at evening when the bell has sounded,
The ?ile-de-france? with all the gulls around it,
The beauty that is spring?s...
These foolish things remind me of you.

How strange, how sweet
To find you still,
These things are dear to me,
They seem to bring you near to me.

The sigh of midnight trains in empty stations,
Silk stockings tossed aside, dance invitations.
Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you...

These foolish things remind me of you.

I can't find the title to Mrs. Slocombes musical makeup kit....
A very familiar circus/carnival tune but I don't know the title.
Any help out there?

Harmons sings "If I ruled the world". can't find the epi right up front. And of course, he has his own take on the lyrics...Arthur Scargill(sp?) would be living in Peking.

(Leslie Bricusse/Cyril Ornadel)

If I ruled the world
Every day would be
The first day of Spring
Every heart would have
A new song to sing
And we'd sing of the joy
Every morning would bring

If I ruled the world
Every man would be
As free as a bird
Every voice would be
A voice to be heard
Take my word
We would treasure each day
That occurred

My world would be
A beautiful place
Where we would weave
Such a wonderful dream
My world would wear
A smile on its face
Like the man in the moon
When the moon beams

If I ruled the world
Every man would say
The world was his friend
There'd be happiness
That no man could end
No my friend
Not if I ruled the world
Every head
Would be held up high
There'd be sunshine
In everyone's sky
If day ever dawned
When I ruled the world
If I ruled the world

Man, seeing those lyrics sure brings back those nostalgic false memories!

I think its "These Foolish Things", Rumbold plays it so fast its hard to pick out the melody, Peacocks version is better(Top Hat and Tails), and then Rumbold sings a few words (The Night Club).

I put the lyrics in the post with Lola and Night and Day.

I wish they had let them both play a bit more since they are both
accomplished pianists.

Lucas imitates Columbo a couple of times, like in "Big Brother"..."Like I say, it's always the one you least suspect."

columbo is mentioned by name in Takeover when Mr. Grace is giving his
ideas on how to thwart the takeover vote.

at that same time in that epi these are also mentioned

Kojak,
Hawaii 5-O

Howard Hughes
Mission Impossible (Humphries says, "Self-destruct in a puff of smoke")

IMDB lists the country of origin as USA. In the '60s, I don't remember
any British TV shows getting airtime, of course I only got 2 channels.
I think the very first British show I remember watching was Dr. Who w/Tom Baker of course, but that was only on PBS...And that's a good point
if it is on PBS or BBC America then it could be British, if you are seeing it
on US Networks it is probably domestic US....Especially true of older programs.

Mae West definitely is I know.

Mr. Mash liked Mae West a bit didn't he!

Mr. Mash wheels in the His and Hers counter display and says:
