I'm not a Harman fan but I agree with that statement. Of course then, none of the other replacements stuck around as long as Harman did.

I liked Mr. Harman, too. I had trouble understanding some of his words, but he always had a high-spirited personality.
:harman01: Sir, since you're going straight home, I suppose you don't want this 2 tickets for the back row of the cinema.
:rumbold01: I didn't hear that.
:harman01: I SAID YOU WON'T BE WANTING THESE 2 TICKETS TO THE CINEMA!!!

Actually, and you don't hear much about her, I think that Candy Davis as
Miss Belfridge was better than any of the other Rumbold Secretaries.
(with Herculean effort, I have refrained from odd noises, gestures or
rude comments in Masculine reference to Miss Belfridge.....do I get a gold star?)

Dear Miss Brahms
This is the 6th...time for me to try to post here in the last 24 hours...
So maybe this time...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No I don't think so...
Mr tebbs and Mr. Goldberg were very good...{and for only one year}.
If the writing would have been better some of the others would have had better rolls...
I think the writing for season #7 was the best one...
Candy Davis and Penny Irving were very good in their rolls...
And as per GREG...Would you have liked Mr. Harman if he only lasted one year ?

After thinking about this for a while, I have come to the conclusion that I liked Harmon better than Mash because they allowed him to be more a part of their "group". Yes, Cpt Peacock did order him off the floor, etc, but.. think about how he was allowed to partipate in the antics with the rest of the staff. The following eppys come to mind for me:
- Harmon is allowed to participate in the filming of the commercial and then goes to the theater with them to see it.
-He is allowed to be a "ringer" in the attempted Grace Bros take over and actually helps save the day, as it were.
- He goes on vacatoin with them in the movie (although he does make out better than the rest of the staff in terms of accomodations).
- He is allowed to "referee" during staff squabbles.
And there are many other examples. These just came to mind right away. I cannot imagine Mash being allowed to be this personal with the rest of the staff.

And the fact of the matter is he is more sophisicated than Miss Brahms or Mrs. Slocombe. Maybe snooty Captain Peacock, and Mr. Humphries can best him, but he knows hes blue collar and proud of it....Whereas the
white collar folk often come off pretentious. And he often flashes that wad of cash!!!!!(overtime alone)

I agree with Maurice. As I stated in another thread I liked Harmon better. And he was the best replacement. No one could substitute for Grainger and Lucas.
Gee, ladies of the board. I wonder why the guys like Candy Davis the best? :? (and we already know how our greg feels about Penny. )

Sorry, I was overcome by an irrestible desire to be like Rumbold in
AYBSA where he tells all that Mrs. Slocombe is the egg-spert,
egg-sperienced etc....but your response is pretty much exactly what was expected :D

I hate the term "replacement" so right there, I don't agree. Humans are unique. No "replacements" are possible. If you're talkin' about "fillers" or "filler roles" then Harman (note spelling per the writers..) filled the role of packing and maintenance man very well. We've discussed the Tebbs/Grainger Lucas/Spooner thing into the ground. 8)

So what do you think of the term "Human Resources"? Gotta be the ultimate in de-personalization under the guise of better personnel services.....
A BIG lie!

From Fire Practice, Harman is putting the wigs on the dummies and Peacock tells him to be quick. When Harman tells Peacock "I would have been a damn sight quicker if you haven't stuck your nose in it", I love it. That one has to be my favourite all time Harman saying !!!

As good as Mash was, his name was a perfest play on his personality. He was a masher, quick with a dirty joke and with his mind in the gutter.
Beverly Harman was a great replacement for him. A kindly older blue collar man who assisted in many a caper with the staff. He also had some great lines like. . . "I couldn't help overhearing, on account of I was listening to every word". Or during class warfare with Captain Peacock, "When we take over, you'll be the first to go! You know that, don't you?".
One of my favorite Harman moments is when Captain Peacock and Mrs. Slocombe are about to go at it and Harman yells, "It's exciting, isn't it? You can feel the tension mounting!"

Not a huge Harman fan but one of my favorite moments with him is when Peacock enters the floor in his "Groovey" gear in "The Old Order Changes" and Harman has that look on his face as he's looking into the camera. I love that one !!!!

Mr Harman always had that wad of cash to flash just as the rest of the staff would be bemoaning their lack of money. He also managed to have the nicest clothes outside of work.:hat:

I must say I preferred him over Mr.Mash. Although they were not meant to be the same character, it is really unfair to compare the two, so I won't. I felt that he got closer to the rest of the staff towards the later series which I didn't mind, because it's not like he was supposed to be a bad guy or anything.

And who could forget his amazing organ performance in "Roots?"?
That's one of my least favorite Harman moments. He kept hitting that wrong note over and over again. It was funny the first time but 4 more times afterwards was annoying.
I thought the writers gave him better lines than Mr Mash. He had lines where he out-joked Peacock and the others, which I don't remember Mr Mash doing - Mr Mash used to get more upset about being ordered off the floor and so on, and being looked down on class-wise - whereas Mr Harman laughed it off.
I think that made him a more sympathetic character and allowed him to be more involved in the plots....

The writers had longer to really sort the Harman character out compared to the Mash character but I do agree 100% with you Dean on the fact of the difference between Mash and Harman.

I have to agree with Greg on this one. I think Mr. Harman works out well as a character and did get more good lines and closer to the staff than Mr. Mash.
However, for some reason, I preferred Mr. Mash over Mr. Harman as well.

Harman definitely got good lines and good development on the show, but i still think mash is funnier. harman got deserved screen time that mash never really got, but mash had much funnier lines and thus i prefer him over harman. don't get me wrong i like harman a lot, but i think the writers coulda given him better material
