View Full Version : Mr. Rumbold's "Listening" Problems
Very Young Mr Grace

Mr. Rumbold has much in common with the seniors I have worked under in time; they all have problems listening to their co-workers!
Remember when he told Miss Brahms to stop wearing door knockers? Or when he couldn't get the story about Mr. Lucas' asthmatic cat and cripple mother just right?
My boss demostrates a few of these traits herself.
What are some of your favorite Rumbold moments?

Playing the piano...When nobody is ready or the wrong song...
Lucas :P
Ps...I also like when he says anything about the board room and looks up...

That would be my favorite Rumbold moment. When he does his "Board Room Level" with the eyes looking upward !!!!
Either that or from "Our Figures Are Slipping" when he first tells the staff that they have a meeting in the morning. He goes wellwellwellwell super fast and it sounds hilarious !!!! Give it a listen to sometime and see what I mean !!

Let's see, I can't remember which episode, but the one where he thinks Capt. Peacock has his digit up Mrs. Slocombes nose.
And in "Anything You Can Do" when the staff are trying to tell him about the insults of the canteen staff. He sure gets it right when he's insulted though.

I enjoyed the the scene from "Dear Sexy Knickers" when Mr. Lucas kneed the jacket, and Mr. Rumbold thought he needed the jacket.

I think it is that scene that makes a Bliss Girl my all time favorite...
that and Harman explaining to Rumbold about "'oovering up the dust" ..the
epi opening scene.

I thoroughly enjoy the eppy when he is trying to sort out the canteen mess. As usual he gets it all wrong, but I especially love it when he can't figure out where the cooked goose comes in to play. :x

from prunes to spagetti to toad-in-the-hole....he has to be led by the nose the
whole way! Wrong-way Cuthbert would be a good nick-name if jug-ears didn't fit sooooo wel.
Let us not forget the hee-larious "Oh, What a Tangled Web" eppy:
:rumbold01: "You were with Stephen in a car shelter...."
:peacock01: "Stephanie in Carshalton!!"

If you think about it, Mr Rumbold as a character doesn't really have any good points - he doesn't listen to his staff, he has no sympathy for them if they need his help, he is always thinking of himself and trying to grab their ideas to present as his own, he is stupid, greedy and vain - and of course as is constantly said he is not even pleasant to look at.
Yet somehow.... do others agree... you can't help but feel sympathetic and understanding to him somehow. He is one of my favourite characters and I always feel sympathetic when they make fun of his ears or his bald head.
I think that says a lot about how good an actor Nicholas Smith is. Here he is playing this character with no positive attributes really - but somehow we like him...

my favorite has to be in dear sexy knickers with kneed and needed, that scene busts my guts everytime and that is why i love that eppy so much. but the door knockers scene comes very close as well, as does anything you can do.

RUMBOLD: "So why did he order them?
PEACOCK: "Order what?"
RUMBOLD: "PRUNES!!!"
SLOCOMBE: "He didn't order them."
RUMBOLD: "Well in that case he can hardly complain that they didn't arrive."
