This is my first post.
I started watching AYBS? years ago when I noticed that Captain Peacock was wearing stiff, detachable shirt collars with his outfit. Years ago most English businessmen wore them. They were common in the United States as well. They fasten to the "neckband" of a shirt with 2 studs. One long one in the front, one short one in the back. The collars are made of cotton and are starched, pressed, polished, and then curled into shape. Years ago they came in hundreds of styles, but nowadays there are only about 6 styles one may choose from.
When AYBS? first aired I was working for a railroad and was wearing stiff collars as part of my uniform (by choice.) I wore the same styles as Captain Peacock.
In the first season not only is Captain Peacock wearing stiff collars but Mr. Humphries is as well. He's wearing a long pointed, spread style that I wear now. Also you'll notice Mr. Grainger wears them in the pilot, and a few episodes as well.
In one episode Mr. Mash refers irreverently to Captain Peacock's collars as "Cardboard collars." This because of the degree of stiffness the collars have.
And yes, I wear my pocket square (handkercheif in breast suit coat pocket) in the approved Grace Brothers fashion. I learned how to fold it correctly by watching AYBS?.
I could really go on about Wendy Richards and Penny Irving but that's for a later date.
