I love BlackAdder!!! It's my favorite show. Okay, I love almost all Britcoms!

If you like Rowan Atkinson & history, you'll love this show. Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie are great too. If you've been waiting to buy the set, it's pretty cheap at Costco ($30 cheaper than what I paid).

I have read about this show for ages, but never had the chance to view it. I'm afraid that my knowledge of British history is pretty low. Will that matter much? Most reviews of the show say that a good knowledge of British history is imperative to understanding what's happening.

Is there a "crash course" I could take somewhere so I can understand the references?

Rowan Atkinson is awesome and I hope to someday view this classic program.

A bit of knowledge helps. You don't have to be a history scholar, don't worry.

The DVD have some history primers in the Special Features sections, so check them out if you want a crash course. If you don't have the DVDs, the time periods you want to check out are (any history buffs please feel free to correct me!)

King Richard III (1492-1495)
Elizabeth I (1558-1603)
King George III (I don't know the exact dates, but it was after he was declared insane and his son made Regent)
WWI (1914-1918 )

Another point worth making for any Blackadder-virgins --

All four series have slightly different tones. It isn't like watching four seasons of AYBS? The first series wasn't as hugely popular as those which followed (though it contains one of my favourite lines of the show as a whole ... "No, I'm a bowl of soup." You had to be there, I expect.)

What I'm saying is -- if you aren't 'getting' the first series, move on to the second. It's quite a lot more accessible. And it has Miranda Richardson as Queenie, and I dare anyone to say she isn't magnificent!

Love Blackadder Goes Forth - except for the last episode. It's such a sad ending  to such a funny show. Hugh Laurie's Lt. George is hysterical :emotlol: . His drag skit in Major Star was priceless.

Love Blackadder Goes Forth - except for the last episode. It's such a sad ending  to such a funny show.

The BBC did a couple of surveys...the last episode of Blackadder Goes Forth was voted the best end episode to a series (related article at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3549747.stm )

In another article that I can't find but remember reading recently on the BBC site, that episode made the top 10 for most memorable endings.

It really is a poignant ending...that's all I will say in case any have not seen it yet.

I agree, season 1 is not that funny, except when Edmund's father calls him by other names because he can't remember his name or that Edmund is his son.

Loved season 2 with QE1, especially the last eppy with Hugh Laurie as Prince Lugwig the Indestructable!

Season 3 when Stephen Fry plays Wellington and he and Blackadder are whacking The Prince around....and Hugh Laurie talking about the Prince and the Porpoise!

Blackadder Goes Fourth, I always cry at the end of the last eppy. It's always hilarious when Flasheart shows up!

I can't live without this series and wish they had made more!

I loved Blackadder, except for the last one. Blackadder goes fourth. My favourite one is the prince regent.

I couldn't agree more! The last episode of Blackadder Goes Forth always makes me cry. :( Other than that, I've seen a couple of episodes from each season, and season 4 twice (entirely) and I do love the show. Especially the weird comparisons they always come up with.

George is brilliant. The eerie thing about Hugh Laurie in drag is that he does actually look like a woman  and I can't blame General Melchett/Stephen Fry one bit for falling for him!

Remember there was also a movie set in the present where Blackadder invents a time machine and goes back in time, first screwing things up; landing on Wellington so that Napoleon wins and conquers England, reducing Shakespere to the inventor of the ballpoint pen, and messing with Robin Hood. Later he goes back and fixes it all, then later makes it so that he is King, and Baldric is Prime Minister.

There was also a Christmas eppisode set in Queen Victoria's time. Tired of being Mr Nice Guy, he gives the boot to a group of carolers with someone he thinks is dressed up like the Queen, only to learn that it really was the Queen, and she was going to give him an award for being the niceest man in England.
