Why did Alfie Bass Leave the Show?

We've all heard Trevor Bannister's story, and Mr. Tebbs' odd incident with the cake endorsements, but why did Alfie Bass leave the show? :shrug:

After all these years I've finally had the chance to see his episodes and I really enjoy them. I wish he was more of a regular.

James Hayter did commercials for a cake company. Mr. Kipling Cakes I think it was.... Anywho... the company didn't like him doing AYBS? plus being associated with their cakes so he had a choice to make... Either do AYBS? and get a miserable paycheck that the Beeb gives or get millions to do the Kipling commercials and work a few days a year. :shrug:

Alfie Bass left the show because he wanted a bigger part in the show,but they couldn't make the part bigger. So he left.

...and just a slight addendum to your post, The Kipling Cake people felt that the Tebbs character was too gruff, and didn't want that "not so nice" personality associate with the product. Silly now...but I guess not then.

Oh, back to Alfie Bass.... I really don't know why he left. Maybe he was only contracted to do one Season. Probably because they didn't know they were going to keep on doing the show ??? :shrug:

Strange but I remember hearing about Alfie wanted more of a part in the show myself and they told him that Mollie and John were the stars but I'll be damned if I can remember where the heck I've heard it from ???? Now I have to play Sherlock Holmes today....
