For years this has been the biggest debate on AYBS? next to the natural colour of Mrs. Slocombe's hair. Give us a "yea" or "ney" on this one and a few examples of why you think he is...... one way or another.

I think he does lean towards Team Pink, but he likes to play both fields. Take "The Erotic Dreams of Mrs. Slocombe"--in the theatre scene at the end, Miss Brahms manages to rile him up so much that he can't control himself :)

I should have voted option 3 but didn't catch it in time. I feel he was but the writers tried to change direction while the car was already moving too fast.
One scene that really kills me is from "His and Hers" when the Ladies Cologne part is being read on the tape recorder and Humphries mistakens it for being for him. Then to top it off, Lucas does his "Glass of water for Mr. Humphries !!!"
Classic !!!!

I definetly think that Humphries swings both ways -- he's had run-ins with both sexes enough times to convince me that he must be bi-sexual
But who really cares?! He's wonderful just the way he is!

I think Wilburforce qualifies as a out-right definite ALMOST.
He leans, he flirts, but he never quite seems to finish.
A lot of "one way or the other" lines about him. Of course in
AYBSA, if I may insert from that show, he states to Mavis that
"No matter what she has heard, he has always slept alone! except for
Wilfred.( His teddy)

I think he swings both ways too. How often has he said he has friends of many persuasions? And he often asks the other members of the sales staff why they're surprised when he talks about his lady friends :!: Or when they SEE one of his lady friends. Like the lady ballet dancer when they were trying to get fit for the firms heatlth scheme?

On "Funny Turns" David Croft made the comment that after the pilot was aired, the BBC said "We love the show but lose the poof!" and Croft said "The poof stays or no show" and walla !! here we are. My personal belief is.......
When the show started out, Humphries (Not Inman) was gay. But as the years wore on and popularity ensued, Inman got conscientious about his character being "gay" and had the writers put ridiculous bits with him and woman. Look at the earlier shows.... anything there to say "Humphries isn't gay" ?no... but as the years wore on, they threw in a date with a woman, Humphries kissing Brahms and wanting to marry Slocombe. I found that ridiculous !! Then in AYBSA? he was in bed with a woman ??? That is one reason I can't watch that show. Too far-fetched. I love Humphries being gay... I want Humphries to be gay. I wouldn't have him any other way !
These are the views of the Wibster. They are in no way the views of the board or anyone else connected with the Board.

There's no way you can build a case against him being gay; between "His and Hers" and Mr. Walpole, he's about as straight as his teeth. But the writers didn't change their minds, I don't think. None of Mr. H's straight moments came until the Tebbs era; by then they might have gotten tired of doing just gay jokes and thought it would be funny after all that time to suggest he might like girls, too. Besides, it apparently only happens under extenuating circumstances like Miss Belfridge planting one on him or Miss Brahms feeling him up.

I actually suspect he's half and half but I didn't see that one before I voted it.
Part of me thinks Mr Humphries should get together with Mrs Slocombe, (The Apartment has convinced me that there is something there)
and part of me wants Mr Lucas and Mr Humphries should get together because there WAS chemistry there (even my mother admits it although she thinks its 'friendship')
Anyway quotes:
Captian Peacock: Humphries? (from the bed)
Mr Lucas: Lucas
Captian Peacock: Thank heavan for that- The Apartment
~*^*~
Mr Grainger: I know we're going slow Mr Humphries but that doesn't mean we have to spend ten mintues on an inside leg.
~*^*~
Edited to add a slightly memorable scene: Mr Humphries in the Navy uniform  that was one of my favorite scenes

Interesting..I believe there was a line where Mr. Humphries said that he "we" was working on Mr. Lucas. I think there definitely was a good friendship on and off screen. Definitely a lot of trust had to be there.

I agree Laurel. I never understood if it's a persons upbringing or religious reasons that they can't love a character because he or she's "gay". The whole of the first 6 Season the writers lead us to believe he was "gay". The innuendo has always been that he was gay. The "trannie" friend, cops with handcuffs, vicars, stringvestites has always been the norm for Humphries. The chef outfit with the pink scarves, the orange outfit coming back from holiday, the references to going "camping". I've covered just about everything so far in this thread. While it was never right out "said", you know. That's why as you've said he's such an icon. Even the gay community were upset because he played his "gay" character so over the top. For Humphries to be "Bi" or just a "mama's boy" is a total let down IMO.
These opinions are expressly Greg WibblyWobbly's and do not reflect the views of the board.

.
They were objecting to the character being "over the top"...not necessarily blaming John for that characterization or playing Humphries that way. Unfortunately I think it was often a case of the messenger being shot for bringing the message. John just never "came out" himself and when asked about Humphries' sexual preferences, John didn't own up to anything--perhaps for fear of alienating people. John was perhaps viewed as not being true to himself, or to the character that made him famous....Wilberforce C. Humphries. Let's face it--neither could really win when it came down to it, and that was due to the era in which AYBS? was presented to the public. Homosexuality wasn't mentioned on American TV until Billy Crystal's character Jodie Dallas on the sitcome "Soap" which aired for the first time here in 1977. AYBS? was WAYYYY ahead of its time, really!

What annoys me when gay rights spokespeople criticise John, they seem to forget that John certainly wasn't the first. If anyone is to blame it's the Mollies of the 18th century. After the days of Cromwell's ban on theatre, extravagance and indulgence was encouraged under the reign of Charles II and gay or bisexual men would go to so called "Molly Houses" and wear women's clothing, make-up and indulge in over the top and effeminate behaviour. It was so outrageous but it was also entertaining and the Mollies came out of their Molly Houses (the gay bars of the 1700s) and onto stages and the people loved their camp entertaining style. So, camp comedy is a British tradition. Kenneth Williams, Frankie Howerd, Dick Emery and John Inman were simply the last great Mollies and it's a shame that we won't see their like again because some people consider an age old tradition politically incorrect and offensive. I met Peter Tatchell (a critic of John, Dick, Kenneth etc) and I told him that I was more offended by his comments than by Mr Humphries or Camp Clarence. How dare anyone speak for a whole group. I'm gay and I'm not offended by Mr Humphries. I see it as part of my heritage and why should I be denied that because one or two people believe it encourages homophobia?
Personally I think that Mr Humphries was gay. I admire John for never giving a "straight" answer because it added to the mystery of the character and the uncertainty makes it all the more funny. Whether he was gay, bi or just a little camp - he was still wonderful.

That's one of the clever lines in the show that kept viewers guessing, see? You can take that two ways. You can think that Mr. H. is hoping HIS bottom will be pinched by Mr. Lucas. :D OR....you can think that Mr. H. is being gallant, and sitting next to Mr. Lucas to prevent her bottom from being pinched again. :lavinia:

or in Camping In when slocombe was blowing up he matress and it took puff after puff after puff. Humphries comes out of the tent offering to help
dont forget the first name basis scene where he couldnt get enough of mentioning Lucas's real name - Dick!
I'm preety sure he's the Dutch Door, because whilst he is effeminate, he also shows qualities that are typical male. I can't think of any at the moment, but when I do, I'll let you know.

jumping on miss brahams in the Erotic dreams of mrs slocobe, for starters!
Also in The Erotic Dreams of Mrs. Slocombe, Mr. Spooner says that Mrs. Slocombe lusting after him must be a new experiance, then Mr. Humpries relies with something like "A lot of women have had second thoughts about me. Unfortunatley it's the second thought that puts them off." This shows that he is kind of disappointed that they were put off. In The Hold-Up I think there was something else to do with Miss Brahms, but I think that it was Miss Brahms that started it.

Yes but in the book "25 Years" David Croft makes mention that after the Pilot aired, he(Croft) went to the head of BBC to see if they could do a whole series of the show and the Head of BBC gave Croft the OK "as long as they got rid of the pouf." Croft said "I'm not getting rid of the pouf, he's the funniest character."

That is a valid point, but he was assumed to be a, as they put it, a poof, because of the steryotypes, in the interview, after David Croft tells the same story, Jeremy Lloyd (other writer) jumps in and says he wasn't a poof, just a mothers-boy and a sissy. But I still think he went both ways.

I think they knew the character was a pouf from the beginning. I think it was the hassle from the public both straight and gay that everyone changed their "offical" tune. They didn't butch up the character any because you loved Humphries for the way he was. It's what made the character what it was. So the writers and everyone involved had only one option, do a Bill Clinton and deny it all but keep business as usual.

They temporarily "butched him up" in quite a few eps though. Of course to confuse the audience. :D He was "involved" with Mrs. S. in at least 3 eps. He made out with Miss Brahms at the ballet (wtf was that all about?....oh yes...confuse us!!) He allowed a passionate kiss from Miss Belfridge. His "friendship" with the ballet instructor in "Strong Stuff" is also up for debate. They smelled each others' perfume/cologne. :D And capping it up...there's absolutely no evidence that Mr. Humphries hasn't EVER been over to ANYONE'S side or hasn't peeked over the fence at ANYONE's garden. I'd love to say "let's officially close this issue" but I know...that ain't-a- gonna happen!!

Miss Brahms - "Oh I feel a right fairy."

What about the scene when he looks so adorable in that Morning Suit when he was best man for his friend Roger. Then he dances around the fountain later on and then goes up the stairs and takes Mr. Grace's valet by the hand and pulls him......somewhere!!!
I know what Mr. Grace was up to when he was pulling Miss Thorpe across the room at the end of the show - but Mr. Humphries....
That definitely clinched it for me.
