I thought this was very important. One of the states listed here was AZ and we have a few posters from AZ. This meat was shipped to WalMarts in 12 states. The whole article is here. http://www.northcountrygazette.org/news/2007/06/10/more_beef/ Maybe this will open up a discussion on how safe YOU think our food supply is...and what precautions you personally take?

An additional 5.3 MILLION pounds of fresh and frozen ground beef products produced by United Food Group LLC of California has now been recalled in addition to the more than 40,000 pounds of ground beef just recalled by Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. which had been shipped to Wal-Mart stores in 12 states after samples tested at a Sherman, Texas plant showed signs of E. coli contamination.

The recalled products were distributed in 11 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

I'm in CA so once again, I'm glad I don't eat meat.
But I think my mom does buy meat at hell-mart, so I think I'll pass this info on to her.

What percentage of CA residents would you say are veg? Just curious. :slocombehair:

I actually have no idea! (Just in case I caused some confussion there, I didn't mean to say that my being in CA had anything to do with not eating meat...just that I was glad I don't because I'm in one of the affected states.) Even though Californians seem to have a reputation around the country of being crunchy-granola types, nobody else I personally know is vegetarian. My family are all extreme meat eaters and delight in making fun of me for being the "different" one. Now I can tease them right back with "have some more salmonella burgers!"
Just kidding.

Either it's tained meat or pesticide treated veggies.. it's all good in my book. The chances of me getting sick on any of this stuff is the same as me winning the Powerball.;)

If you cook the tainted meat throughly you won't get sick. Don't forget cook your hamburger till it's done. Oh by the way we all have ecoli in our bodies. :camp:

Cooking it "until it's done" is quite arbitrary. I can say that in order to be at its safest, your burgers need to register 165 on a meat thermometer. Some people stop at medium/medium rare, and that's "more than done enough" for them. But unfortunately, not done enough for the e coli bugs. Cooking burgers well done, with no hint of red or pink juices is favorable. If you like your burgers undercooked, then you eat at your own risk. As a professional food person, I say don't allow your kids or anyone you know with a compromised immune system to eat anything but well-cooked hamburger. And be sure to wash your hands after dealing with any uncooked proteins.

I only buy my meat from the Amish or other good butchers at our local Farmer's Market. I won't buy anything other than occasional fish or chicken tenders at grocery stores.

I simply refuse to touch most conventional meat. If it comes from a factory farm, I refuse to buy it. That includes milk and eggs.

I get a lot of my meat and such from the Amish as well. Very fresh and at a good price !!
