 To Moderator: I wasn't sure whether to put this "here" or "there"? Is Canadian Broadcasting British?? Feel free to move this topic about....:) ...to it's rightful spot on the board.

What is your favorite Canadian Show?

I have 3.
One for "grownup" viewers:

The RED GREEN SHOW.
(hence the need to qualify the term "grownup" :) )

The other 2 are for the kiddies:

NODDY
UNDER THE UMBRELLA TREE

Under the Umbrella Tree
Premiered September 1, 1986

"Under the Umbrella Tree" began in 1986. There were 280 episodes in 8 years.

The show followed Holly Higgins, and her puppet friends, Iggy Iguana, Gloria Gopher, and Jacob Bluejay.

The show was made possible by Noreen Young Productions, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The show aired on "CBC".

The show is no longer airing on any television station. Producer, Noreen Young, predicts she can get the show back on the air around 2005.

This was a wonderful children's show. Has anyone heard anything else about the show getting back on the air?

This was a heart warming, educational children's show about an iguana, a bluejay and a gopher and thier human friend Holly who all live together.

Well, Lucas, I don't know how to tell they are Canadian Shows. In fact, now that I've listed it, I am not all that certain that 'Noddy' is Canadian. I think I discovered that it was when I was looking for a T-shirt for my grandson a couple of years ago with Noddy on it. :)

I liked ALOT of the Red Green show, but I recall some parts weren't as funny as others....but on the whole, I thought they were just a hoot!!

Maybe others will jump in and list some more shows. Maybe the forum moderators will move the topic from Brit-Wit to a busier section of the board. I just didn't know where to start it.

Goldie,
I think Red Green is the only person in the whole world that uses more Duct Tape than I do.....gotta love him for that!

I even consider it "educational"... who knows what you can learn to do.

I love the Red Green Show. I have a bit of trouble staying up on Saturday nights to watch it though.Three AM comes too soon in the morning.

One Canadian produced show that I like to watch is Strange Days At Blake Holsey High. It has been showing on both NBC and Discovery Kids. One of the characters is played by a Canadian actor that I like,Tony Munch. Also He is in The Cinderella Man and the upcoming George Romero's Land Of The Dead.

I'm gonna have to check out NBC here for "Strange Days..."!

Are the Red Green shows on cable there? I don't think it is shown here on "regular" TV any more. I know I haven't gotten to see it in a long time.

Red Green is awesome! Our local PBS station began airing it in 2002 and I haven't missed an episode since.

I heard that Steve Smith wants next season to be the last. Say it ain't so! Hopefully the rest of the group can convince him to keep on going. I tell my friends that this show of kind of a Canadian version of "Tool Time" from "Home Improvement". So far they all agree that it's a hilarious show.

Thanks sonosun and Very Young Mr Grace for the information! I'm glad to hear it is still on PBS! I had no idea they were still making new shows! WooHoo!

There's always that chance it will be in a PBS package again here too.

I ran through the TV local schedule for Strange Days... and it's not being shown anytime soon locally.

Going back and look to be sure that Red Green isn't on the PBS schedule in the wee hours somewhere.... :)

I forwarded the page from the Boomers Zoomers '70s archive to my daughter to see if maybe she used to watch it while I worked in the Toy Department of an upscale local department store just like Grace Bros. :)

I spent the better part of my youth in Canada. My Dad was stationed there with NORAD,in the late sixties, early seventies.I was always in front of the TV on Saturday and Wed. nights for Hockey Night in Canada. One of my favorites was called "The Beachcombers"(comedy/drama program). Then there was "Second City TV"which was very popular in Canada.....gee I wonder why?Maybe that nearly all the cast were Canadian?I can remember where we were at we had alot more US programing than Canadian.

I love Canadian Television, but we all know why.

Yes, I remember "Under the Umbrella Tree!" I watched that show when I was 3 years old and I LOVED it! Holly, Gloria, Jacob and Iggy were so cool. It was an excellent children's show. A shame they don't air it anymore.

I used to watch Noddy all the time, I loved the characters and music on that show. Now I'm not sure if that was Canadian or not. I think it was, but am not positive. Because on the episode of Aybs: "Memories are Made of This", Mrs.Slocombe crashes into Mr.Rumbold's office with the golf cart and says "Hey Big Ears, where's Noddy's house?" Big Ears was a character on Noddy, so maybe it was originally British? The characters on my station spoke non-British like though.

If your memory works anything like mine, and it sounds like it might, all time is set in relation to where we were stationed. We were a career military family. I remember the timeline of what shows were on TV/what songs were popular by where we lived. :shake:

I haven't seen either of those shows. Thanks for mentioning them.

I know what you mean, I loved "Under The Umbrella Tree" too. I watched it everyday when I was keeping my 2nd youngest grandson while Mommy worked. He's 14 now.

I had wanted to get tapes of the show for the youngest one but never could find them. However, I think my daughter finally found a used one of the Christmas eppy. If I had it, I'd watch it right now. :)

I recall Mrs Slocomb saying that too...and wondered at the time if I heard her right. It could be that "Noddy" was being seen on the British telly at the time even if it was a Canadian production I guess. I just know I had to get the Noddy T-shirt from Canada. :)

I suppose I could look up the info somewhere....but then that would be too easy.

I recall an episode where Holly caught herself talking to a furnace, lol.
But my mum and I so enjoyed watching that show together everyday.
Life was so light and airy back then, what ever happened to those days? Nowadays the programs are so....different? Oh well, changes happen, right?

Somebody mentioned Avonlea, that is an excellent show! I can't believe I forgot it. We watch it every Monday evening at 6:30pm on channel 38. It is very wholesome and educational!

The kids programs sure are "different" thesedays. Many are simply horrid! Grandmothers certainly couldn't stand to watch them day-in and day-out. Thank goodness for VHS and DVD and all the old programs on them!!! :)
Did you see where "Under The Umbrella Tree" has several new releases on DVD this year? I'm putting that on my list to Santa along with the DVD player to watch them on.

Avonlea sounds so familiar for some reason, tho, I don't think I have ever seen it.

Vicar,

I am sure a google search on SCTV would give you alot of info. When I watched it the cast was....

John Candy
Eugene Levy
Cathrine O'Hara
Joe Flaherty
Andrea Martin
Rick Moranis
Harold Ramis
and Dave Thomas as the Beaver.

This was back in 1976 and onward. If one thinks about it it was really the 70's version of South Park.

Any shows I remember are in a timeline from 1969 to 1977... our stay in Alberta(Red Deer) are some of my fondest memories.

ARTHUR

I can't believe I forgot to list Arthur!

Arthur is the name of an animated series that airs on PBS in the United States. The series is based on the line of Arthur books by author Marc Brown.

The star character, Arthur (full name Arthur Timothy Read) is an aardvark in the third grade who has two younger sisters: precocious four-year-old D.W. (short for "Dora Winifred", though she's always referred to as "D.W.") and baby Kate. Arthur's sibling rivalry with D.W. is often a theme of the show.

The program centers around the daily lives of a group of anthropomorized animal elementary school characters, who deal with various problems such as school plays, classroom assignments, and so forth.

Various social issues are also raised by the show, and a diverse range of characters are purposefully used. Among issues raised include asthma, blindness, and divorce.

Arthur is set in fictional Elwood City. While the show's producers have stated that Elwood City has no specific location (so as to allow the viewers to imagine it is located wherever they wish), various fans have suggested it as being set in locations in the Northeast United States such as Massachusetts.

The show's opening theme song is the catchy reggae song Walking Down The Street, performed by Ziggy Marley. Each show contains two self-contained episodes, separated by a live-action vignette of schoolchildren doing a project that is usually related to the subject of the first episode.

The series often contains a few in-jokes for older viewers (such as parents or older siblings), with Art Garfunkel, Mister Rogers, and even Yo-Yo Ma, the noted cellist, having appeared in animated form on the show.
CINAR Animation produced 125 Arthur cartoons over the period from 1996 to 2005.
In October 2004, Postcards From Buster, an Arthur spinoff, began airing on PBS.

Cast

Buster Baxter: a rabbit. Buster is Arthur's best friend, and is a big fan of "Bionic Bunny," the characters' favorite superhero, and believes aliens are real. Buster has asthma, and his parents are divorced (he lives with his mother, Bitzi).

The Brain: a bear. The Brain is the class genius and an only child. Brain is afraid of water, and his greatest loves are math and science. The Brain's real name is Alan Powers; however, only his parents and teachers refer to him by his actual name. Brain's parents run an ice cream shop, and he even works there sometimes. Celebrates Kwanzaa.

Francine Alice Frensky: a monkey. Francine is a tom boy who loves sports and singing. She is also Jewish. She has a quick temper and she can really start a heated argument. She is also very sarcastic at times.

Sue Ellen Armstrong: a cat. Sue Ellen is a recent transfer to Arthur's school, her family having lived in various spots around the world. She is also interested in the arts and martial arts.

Muffy Crosswire: a monkey. Muffy is the wealthiest girl in school, and tends to be extremely self-centered. Muffy also has a love of boy bands, such as the Backstreet Boys. Her real name is Mary Alice Crosswire. Muffy's father is the owner of an automobile dealership. She and Francine are best friends, and they even share the same middle name. They enjoy shopping together.

Binky Barnes: a bulldog. Binky acts as the class bully, though he seems to vary between pushing others around and hanging out with the other kids. Binky does enjoy playing the clarinet and ballet, however. Binky is the one character who's been held back a grade.
Mr. Nigel Ratburn: a rat. Arthur and the others' teacher, who's quite enthusiastic about education and assigning homework assignments.
The Tibble Twins: bear cubs. A pair of twins who live near Arthur's house, and tend towards obnoxious behavior. They attend the same preschool as D.W.
Grandma Thora: Arthur and D.W.'s paternal grandmother, who is quite caring, but tends toward being a bad cook. Grandma Thora is based on Brown's own grandmother Thora, who encouraged him by saving his childhood drawings in a bottom drawer.
Prunella: a poodle. Prunella is interested in yoga and creative arts. She is also very "hokus-pokus", and she likes trying out predictions on her friends. Her favorite book and film series is "Henry Skreever", a spin-off of Harry Potter.
Pal: Arthur's small pet dog, who (like the other pets of the characters on the show) isn't anthropomorized, though a series of episodes have shown him as being able to communicate with baby Kate (and vice-versa).
Marina: a rabbit. Marina is a recent addition to the Arthur cast. She is blind, and she is Prunella's best friend. Marina helps children learn about being blind and how a kid can be different but still normal.

The fact that the characters are different animals is almost never referred to in the show. It is subtly implied that in Arthur's universe species is akin to race.

When other countries are seen in the show they are usually inhabited by only one type of animal.

It might be assumed that in Arthur's universe, nonanthropomorized animals such as Pal coexisting with sentient members of the same species such as Binky or Prunella might be akin to how humans and primates (such as chimpanzees) coexist with each other in the real world. Indeed, several episodes have shown such mixtures as sentient canines working at animal shelters.

SCTV is a satire of television itself. SCTV are the call letters- Second City Television - of a fictional Canadian television station. Second City is the famous Improv group that also spawned Saturday Night Live. Although it's a satire and parodies society, it's nowhere near as raunchy as "South Park," not much is. So don't be afraid, Vicar. Check out this brilliant show for yourself; the first three seasons are finally available on DVD. The "Eh, Hoser" quote is from the Mackenzie brothers- Bob and Doug -shown below. Their public access show, Kandian Korner" -sometimes called "Great White North" - is featured on SCTV. These characters also had a movie of their own -"Strange Brew."

"Avonlea" is based on characters from L.M. Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables" series set on Prince Edward Island.

I finally figured out why "Avonlea" sounded familiar and know it must be a wonderful series! I love watching film of that time period!

I really appreciate the info on SCTV, it HAS to be a hoot!!!! Sounds alot funnier than South Park ever would to me. :o

Thanks for the post! There is so much more to these children's shows (like ARTHUR) than one would expect. Not only are they fun and entertaining they are important for their emotional and social growth at the same time.

Point of order Mr Chairman....I said that SCTV was the 70's version of South Park.....not just like South Park.It was pushing the boundries of what was acceptable, but like south park no one was safe from thier satire.I am sure that the politically correct crowd would have objetions to a good number of the SCTV episodes,lo these may years later.Maybe I should have said it was like Saturday Night Live but more rebellious and no holds barred during its time??????I still to this day have a shocked reaction the way they spoof Morther Theresa.

Yes, Tim, it was Canadian and I'm sorry to say I didn't get to see it. :(

Seeing Things
was on CBC (60 mins)

Seeing Things was a Canadian suspense-thriller, during the '80s. Journalist Louie Ciccone (Louis Del Grande) has psychic abilities, which tend to get him into "trouble". Louie continuously searched for that award-winning story that would propel him above his peers.

First Episode
Tuesday September 15, 1981

I May Be Seeing Things, But I'm Not Crazy
Reporter Louie Ciccone is assigned to cover the courts, and he wanders into the trial of a derelict charged with a skid row murder. It seems like an open and shut case hut then Louie has a vision and becomes convinced that the tramp has been framed.

Last Episode
Friday May 15, 1987
A Vision in White
Louie realises that Redfern hasn't told him about her investigation into the mob or her upcoming marriage. He suggests that her fianc? may have a connection to the recent mob killings, infuriating both Heather and Marge.

Cast and Crew
Louis Del Grande Louie Ciccone Murray Westgate Max Perkins Frank Adamson Sgt. Brown Louis Negin Marlon Janet-Laine Green Heather Redfern Martha Gibson Marge Ciccone Al Bernardo Alberto Ciccone Ivan Beaulieu Jason Ciccone Lynne Gordon Anna Ciccone John Fox Falstaff

Hmmmmmm......... There are more Canadian shows that aren't listed here than are, that's for sure!

If they aren't/weren't shown locally on PBS, I doubt that I would see them myself.

The sci-fi HIGHLANDER has too much going on for me. I don't enjoy action-adventure shows so much. And the more action, the less enjoyment. :)

What do you think of the show? :?:

I liked Tales from Avonlea which Disney picked up (but was all shot in the great white north) and Flash Forward (only had one season) another Disney series shot in Canada.Jewel Staite was pretty awesome for a 13-14 year old.
Anybody ever catch either one of these?

Especially when FD uses it to fix both his glasses and his pocket protector. When he puts his glasses in his shirt pocket they stay in his pocket. Eventually he removes them and his two ballpoints come out stuck to the glasses. 8)

SCTV was great! Sunday nights on CBC aren't the same anymore without "Road To Avonlea" and "Wind At My Back." Those shows were fantastic. Kudos to mentioning Degrassi and Under The Umbrella Tree. 8)

Here are some of my favourites that weren't mentioned:

The Eleventh Hour
The Royal Canadian Air Farce
The King of Kensington
Mr. Dressup (God rest Ernie's soul  )
Today's Special (not a great show, but it was good to a five year old. lol )
The Littlest Hobo
Les Intrepides/The Intrepids (GREAT show!)
Wonder Why?
My Pet Monster
Inspector Gadget (well, not JUST Canadian but...)
