View Full Version : What's your favorite Mrs. Slocombe drunken moment?

I won't make this a poll, because I think she was drunk too many times to fit into a poll  Especially since I'm counting both the times where she was visibly drunk on the show and her tales of her exploits at/leaving the pub (with or without Mrs. Axelby) after a few too many. :slocombe:
Off the top of my head, ones that stand out for me are in "the clock," where she says "that escalator will do someone a mischief," and the part in "The erotic dreams of Mrs. Slocombe" when they are at the ballet and she doesn't notice Mr. Humphries putting his hand on her leg because she's so drunk on liqueur chocolates. :drunktest:
The scene before the dance in German week was pretty funny too. Mrs. Slocombe made a great lush
Her explanations for her drunken state always crack me up too ("the hat must be too tight," "I think one of those crisps must have been bad," etc.)

I actually did a poll on this on our old board. It's a fun topic.. I love them all, of course. But I think her staggering down the steps in "The Clock" was priceless. "That escalator's going to do someone a mischief!"
:theclock: :grainger01: :slocombe: This scene required Mollie to use her Lucille Ball talents at physical comedy.

The Clock was a great episode! Best Mrs. Slocombe drunk moment was when she tried to ask Captain Peacock to "Trip the light fantastic". It came out all garbled and when Peacock says, "I beg your pardon?" Mr. Humphries replies, "She wants you to rip her tight elastic!"

"Erotic Dreams" is an ep that gets the bum's rush round these parts but I like it. It gives Wendy something to do! People forget that. This ep also gets quoted incorrectly quite frequently. It's not "Squirrel NUTKING". Mrs. Slocombe recalls the Beatrix Potter story "Squirrel NUTKIN" in her dream.

I agree with Tiddles on this and I am unanimous in that.:083:

:slochead: "Captain Peacok, looks like we'll be able to trip the tight lanfastic."
:peacock01: "I beg your pardon."

"The Clock" has to be my very favorite drunk moment for Mrs. Slocombe.

All of her drunk scenes are incredible, but I think she shines the most in "The Clock". I especially love the part where she stands up to give a speech at the dinner. :emotlol:

I like in the Erotic Dreams where she says
I'm taking my slimming pills only I can't bear the taste of plain tonic. That's why I'm putting gin and lemon in.

"Cold Store" is great. When Rumbold states that he can smell "rum and peppermint". I crack up when she tries to explain that she thought Mr. Lucas could use it after he "fell" down the stairs and then realizes her thermos is empty!:beerchug:

That's pretty much my top 3 too, though I'd rank drunken German dancing over drunken molestation of Mr. Humphries :D

Well darn you picked all the ones I would have and lets not forget on GAF when she got very tipsy after coming back from "stealing" the gypsy cart and the one where they went to the pub and got challenged to a game of darts. Oh yes and the one where they had to muck in together to do all the chores of a regular staff and Miss Lovelock was giving Mr. Rumbold suggestions on how a hotel staff should run and she wound up drinking a very large snifter of brandy. I think I got all the ones where she was very drunk in GAF. I might be mistaken. Oh and for excuses I can't remember which one she said this but she said she got a crisp caught in her throat and had to have a few gin and tonics to wash it down and then the one where she got good and drunk in the store when trying to keep from getting a cold and she gets one any way. Except in that episode she started out with brandy in her cereal and then she draink mint and pep or something like that in a thermos. I think that episode might have been called Cold Store????

OK, now that we are on the subject... one thing I've always wondered about. In "Erotic Dreams" in one of her drunken stupors, she makes mention of stepping out to buy a packet of "crissops". What are "crissops" ?? Is she trying to drunkenly say "crisps" ???
Sir Humphries

I always thought she was trying to say croissants. But why they would come in a packet is beyond me.

She's over-enunciating the word "crisps" to compensate for the tendency to slur one's words while drunk, trying to convince Mr. Rumbold that she's still sober.

Some of my favorite drunken Slocombe moments are the ones that happened off-screen. I love all the falling down incidents with Mrs. Axelby because of "a crack in the sidewalk" or because of shoes "with anklestraps." Both are plausible excuses but we really know it's because Axelby and Slocombe were completely tanked. It's so rich how Slocombe tries to play it off. I also love Mr. Humphries' description to Mr. Lucas about the company coach trips- he says something like "You can see Mrs. Slocombe going home kaylied." I always wished we had an episode that had them on one of those trips.
