I personally love this show. It isn't AYBS?,but it does have the same chemistry and some of the same characters. It is funny too.

I hated this show when I first saw it. For all stupid reasons too.... They weren't in the shop anymore, the whole Mavis thingy but then I sat down to do wallies from it and I realized that the magic was still there, just in different form. The Second season is where everything started to gel together. Too bad they didn't keep going on with the show.....
Now I'm a bonifide Grace and Favour nut !!!!!

I loved it! It's nice to see the staff in a setting outside of the store. I don't think they could have gotten 10 seasons out of it though, and were wise to end it after the 2nd while it was still on a high note.

the idea of AYBS getting another chance......intoxicating
And I think in fact, they did a very good job, considering the age of the
originals.
The new characters well, frankly.......I greatly enjoyed all of them.
I got the DVD as soon as I could and gave the old tapes to my sister.

Excellent show....I only wish they'd made more of them. Can you imagine what the reaction would've been from the "staff" if , at some point or other , Miss Belfridge had shown up in a tour group or as a guest in some other situation? How about Miss Novelty Candles showing up or perhaps applying for a job at the hotel?
I'd liked to have seen Mrs. Axelby come onboard, perhaps as a new addition to the cast, working at the Manor now partially owned by her good friend, Mrs. Slocombe.
What if Mrs. Slocombe had resurrected her perfume-making skills? After all, she was in the country at Millstone Manor, where she could've grown all kinds of herbs and other vital ingredients. Just the making and marketing of the perfume could've been sources for several episodes, with lots of opportunities for good laughs.

Yes, I really liked this show. I could have stood with a couple of more seasons. I got the DVD with all 12 eppys. Now I can watch it forever and ever :D I too wish Mrs. Axelby could have been seen. I missed Mr. Lucas when he left. I would have liked to see how he reacted to the country. (I did see him on an eppy of Keeping Up Appearances. He worked at a store and sold kitchen remodeling stuff.) My favorite new character would have to be Mavis. SHE'S not afraid to tell old Rumbold off. "There will be no more arguing at the table. And you eat all them taters Mr. Rumbold or you'll get no pudding. Then when she does give him the pudding she sticks those two cinnamon sticks in it so it looks like his ears! I laugh hilariously every time.

I'm a big fan of this Grace Brothers 'last-hurrah'. Another season or two would have been perfect for me, as I think there was a lot of potential for stories and character; arguably more so than the original series, which had inherent restrictions (the odd foray to the Costa Plonka notwithstanding ...)
To be quite honest, the writing for "Grace and Favour" (don't make me call it by the other name, I'm easily confused) is a little hit and miss. There are moments where the dialogue is sublime; for example:
"Do you doubt her veracity?"
"Pardon?"
"Do you DOUBT her VERACITY?"
"Well I know she 'ad it when I first knew 'er ..."
Then there are other moments - often set pieces - which kind of fall flat. For example, the interview with the British Rail waiter, complete with punchline and then off-stage crash.
(Having said that, comedy's a very personal thing, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this scene is another fan's favourite.)
What makes the series really special for me is the ensemble and their performances. Lines which would otherwise be forgettable become belly-achingly funny, when delivered by actors with well-honed comic timing.
Alongside the individual talents of the cast, there's also the whole 'togetherness' vibe which I find endearing. Just as the characters have known each other "Years and years ... and years ... and years and years ..." and thus can play upon that connection, the actors are similarly well-acquainted with their peers. When I watch the group scenes in particular, it's terrific to see the generosity and understanding in those performances.
I'd agree with Mr WibblyWobbly that the second season is the stronger. The first feels like an extended pilot, establishing the new situation (though it has some wonderful moments). My personal favourite episode would have to be the petrified-pussy one. Shame we never got another season. Catherine's idea for Slocombe's Country Perfumeries is wonderful; how nice it would have been to see an episode set during the local village fayre, with our heroes once more pushing goods over the counter (and Mavis in her kissing booth trying to avoid Malcolm, and Maurice Moulterd terrifying the children at the animal corner, and Miss Lovelock running the pony rides ...)
Missed opportunity! Still, we have our imaginations!
(With apologies for the length of the post; so much stored up enthusiasm, and finally a place to vent it all!)

I've been watching the program for years. Here in Canada, we call it "Are You Being Served? Again!" But I find "Grace and Favour" so much easier to say! The show had a much more relaxed approach to it than the original. They would always air the series immediately after the finale of AYBS? (The Pop Star.), so it was like a little vacation from the regular series.
Now of course, I have all of the series on dvd so I can watch them anytime I want. Sometimes I like to treat myself to some mini marathons on a dull sunday afternoon.

Not to get too off topic here but I have to agree 100% with you. Commercials are the main reason (besides crap shows) that I watch NO regular programs. They will show 5 minutes of something and then cut to a commercial. Then it's finger on the remote time and click-click-click.....

I remember right after season 2 had aired, our local PBS ran an interview show with John Inman during "pledge week." During this interview he stated that season three was being worked on and the plots had been outlined, but the contract had not been renewed for season three by the BBC. The gist of season 3 was that Mavis would realize that Mr. Humphries was indeed to old for her and she ended up getting engaged/married to Will. This interview aired many years ago and I know I had it on tape somewhere. I will have to go looking again.

If anyone is interested, there's an excellent facility on-line which allows you to view web-sites that are now defunct. It's called the Internet Archive.
http://www.archive.org/
To view the 'Mavis and Wil' site, you'll need to plug in its original URL to the Archive's 'Wayback Machine' (fortunately it still came up on Google):

3 things....
First, DVD's(or videos) give you the ability to re-veiw and remind yourself of
how an episode went...very important for old farts who can barely remember
what they had for lunch (or is it dinner?). sounds vaguely familiar to me....
Second, My comment about 2 words ...DVD.....shows that there are

However, being an AYBS? fansite, I would doubt to see a person post negatively about the show. Either that, or they are afraid of being attacked by us fans.
I remember on the Old Board, that there were a few AYBS? fans that didn't particularly like GAF. Not all spin offs are liked by the same fans. I loved Happy Days but hated Joanie Loves Chachi !!!!
I remember a certain WibblyWobbly who didn't at all care for AYBS?A untill we made him buy the DVD's.:lol2:
Right you are buddy !!! You and Tids were on me till I gave them a try and now I'm sorry I didn't !!!!!!! Thank you !!!!!

Well, I don't have the DVDs. I have the episodes taped off TV and burned onto Video CDs (I don't own a DVD burner  ). The show's OK, but to me it's vastly inferior to AYBS? (and Maurice Moulterd is extremely annoying to me). If someone gave me the DVDs, I wouldn't mind, but I don't want to spend good money on seeing Mr. Moulterd in digitally-enhanced splendor.

Hi all! New to these forums.
It's good to see I'm not the only obsessed AYBS person out there, lol.
I enjoy this show, it's good to see all of the old characters together. It's just a shame Lucas wasn't involved.
AYBSA wasn't as funny as AYBS but the characters were old so the pace wasn't going to be the same as it was. I personally love it just as much as the first series.

I love it! I think it's very funny and the chemistry is still there in bounds. It was a brave choice and I am glad the BBC did it even though they didn't really support it. I still watch it and it makes me laugh and that's the whole point really.

That's one thing about AYBSA (GAF) , you can become very familiar with
all the episodes very quickly. I have watched all of them in 1 setting....
DVDs are great for that!
