I read about this in one of the AYBS books. Trevor, like most actors, didn't want to "wear out" the part. Plus, there was a stage play touring in which he was involved, and the dates clashed with the filming of AYBS at that particular time. He just felt it was time to leave.

I'm glad he left in a mature fashion. Nowadays when some big name stars leave their shows, a lot of bad things are said in the tabloids and their former co-stars sometimes say bad things about them. Trevor's co-stars always have great things to say about him. :D

VYMG, you've done very well !!!!
I often used to wonder if it really wasn't the money tough and the fact that the show that was built around was being handed over to another actor (Inman). Those reasons would be enough to make me leave !!!

Yeah, it's funny how Lucas was originally supposed to be one of the MAIN characters of AYBS and then Humphries went and took over that position. I think the show was supposed to have Slocombe and Lucas as it's main two characters ... right??

I just think it's kinda funny (bad thing for Lucas but definetly a good thing for Humphries). :|

Yes, the show was originally written with Lucas as the Main male lead and Slocombe as the main female lead.

But would we have loved it the same?

(probably  )

You mean if Lucas kept the lead ?? I would have definitely still been nuts for it... as long as Humphries were still there !!!!

I remember that, at one point after the pilot was aired, someone at the BBC wanted to take the "poof" out of the show

The BBC wanted to take the poof out of the show. David Croft said the poof stays. That was before the show was picked up by BBC. It's a wonder it ever made it to the air.

It was after the "Pilot" was aired when David Croft was asked if he could do a Season (6 eppys) of AYBS?. The head of comedy at the Beeb said that the "poof" had to go and David Croft said flat out, "The poof stays or no show.

I'm so glad that Croft spoke up about keeping Inman, as the show would have been incredibly dull without him. I personally don't care who is the main character. I love them all and think that they each bring a special gift to the show that made it so wonderful!

I can't imagine the show being as funny with Lucas in a lead role.

I never much thought about "lead roles" in this BritCom as they just make a great team.

Since we watch the series again and again perhaps, those parts with different actors playing the characters don't seem to be the central figures because of the changes IMO. (Anyway, leaving because you are not a lead character surely doesn't make you one ~ wouldn't that seem to rather defeat the purpose....?)

:?:

Honestly, I think he had something else he wanted to do, as VYMG already stated.

The truth of the matter is exactley what VYMG had said. BBC would not alter their scheduel areound Trevor's stage show so he said Ta-Ta....

Lucas was in a lead role in the early episodes. :)

Well, Lucas was the lead but the whole of the cast made the show... it wasn't until let's say Season 6 or 7 that the show became the "Mollie and John Show" and to me... that's when it suffered.

That's how I watched it. I thought some characters were funnier than others sometimes, but it was the "whole of the cast" that made the show for me. Mr. Humphries was simply the icing on the cake.

I heard that is how we also lost Mr. Mash and almost Frank Thornton. The BBC would call them up at the last second and tell them the show was renewed. However like Larry Maryten Trevor had something else going so could not do it. Frank was the same way, but he chose to do both the series and the other.

Good grief! They couldda lost the whole thing like that. Thank goodness it worked out Thornton could do both at that time. I also enjoy seeing him on the "Last of the Summer Wine" series now.

Well it was nice to have different juniors in that place to see different actors put a different spin on the junior role.

LOL,

I couldn't imagine what the store would have been like without Capt.Peacock there. I really liked Mr.Lucas, but I think I preferred Mr.Spooner as his replacement though. And as for Mr.Mash, I think Mr.Harmon did just as good a job, I couldn't pick which one I liked better.

Lucas :DI know that Trevor had other irons in the fire, but I take into consideration that he may have also felt that he took the Mr. Lucas character as far as it could go. There is no shame in owning up to that because it does happen on occasion in the acting profession as Larry "Frank Burns" Linville attested to. We can't expect every actor/actress to be a James Arness or a Tom Baker.

Do you remember in "Sit Out" when Mr. Rumbold explains that the day's sales were one of the worst on record. Spooner then asks, "What was the worst day?" And Peacock says, "When we didn't sell anything all day and fired the junior." Maybe that was the writer's way of explaining Lucas' departure. Lucas got the sack. :?

Greg WibblyWobbly

I would like to think Lucas went out giving everyone the Two Finger Salute on his own terms rather than get the sack.http://lordgreg.minki.net/tfs.gif

Then Miss Hurst would have hooked up with Lucas, making Peacock totally jealous and continuing their feud.

There was also a small reference... maybe. In one of the Season 8-10 shows, Mrs. Slocombe says, "Would it be possible to have a sensible junior for once?" or something along those lines. Was this a reference to Lucas?

I like to think that Lucas left the store to follow a bird to France where she used him and now he's working his way to America on a tramp steamer.
