Can't believe I haven't started this thread before this!

One thing I've noticed about the actors in British Comedy. They are not "one hit wonders". The supporting casts are every bit the stars as are the primary characters!

For instance, On "The Vicar of Dibley", Trevor Peackock (plays the character of Jim) No No No ... Yes he does!

I just love him....take a peek at his impressive (IMO) bio:

I absolutely LOVE the Vicar of Dibley! I remember watching it for the first time on PBS a few years ago and then, like the next day, I ordered all the VHS tapes off Amazon  Then they ended up releasing the DVD box set of the show a couple of months after I got my tapes -- so I ended up ordering that too! Obsessed much?

I enjoy watching Waiting For God too -- EXCELLENT SHOW! Love Basil -- the line about him wanting that condom machine for the gents toilets made me DIE laughing! What a perv! :P

The Vicar of Dibley
Paul Hoggart on a national institution

There is a vacancy in the Christmas schedule since Del Boy?s Reliant Robin finally sputtered off to the great Peckham council estate in the sky. It?s the space where the warm-hearted family comedy goes, the comedy that isn?t hip or edgy or dark; but which eight out of ten viewers say they prefer.
Only Fools and Horses won the BBC?s nation?s favourite sitcom poll earlier this year. For many the big surprise was that The Vicar of Dibley came third. The story of an irreverent, chocolate-loving woman vicar descending on a rural parish full of harmless eccentrics never achieved critical rapture. It wasn?t ground- breaking or dangerous, but that didn?t matter to the viewers, who loved it.

It is five years since the last episode and Geraldine Granger is ?older and wider?, as Dawn French puts it. The ensemble are all back with her for three new shows: Alice, the dim-witted verger, now the mother of ten children by the drippy Hugo Horton; Hugo?s haughty father, David; the not-quite- with-it Jim Trott; the boring Frank; and the lovelorn farmer Owen Newitt, played by Roger Lloyd Pack. French has said that going back to rehearsals ?felt like putting a nice old cardie on?.

Pack, of course, is also a veteran of Only Fools and Horses, in which he played Trigger, so he has become a minor Christmas institution in his own right. ?The show is a sweet, kind- hearted programme,? he says. ?It has a very gentle humour, and I guess it?s very safe and reminds people of a lost age. There?s an innocence about it that?s absent from our life now.?

In the Christmas episode, Geraldine reflects on ten years as vicar. As the parishioners prepare to celebrate her anniversary she wonders if she has wasted her life in this ossified corner of the country. Yet French recalls that the theme of a woman priest, if not the style of the show, was still controversial when it started. ?A lot of the mail I got was from vicars. These were Christian people using appalling language and telling me where to shove it, basically.?

Richard Curtis, who tweaks the scripts during rehearsals, also likes to lace the show with a dash of sexual frisson. ?He?s not above a bit of smut,? says Pack. The Christmas episode flirts with the concept of clerical lesbianism, a theme that reaches a climax with an eye-widening guest appearance by the model Rachel Hunter. There is another surprise guest visit near the end of the show that may have viewers wondering if they can believe what they have seen.

But there?s nothing remotely shocking. If you cringe, it won?t be with the embarrassment induced by The Office. ?People used to be sniffy about it for not having attitude,? says Pack. ?But it has really grown on people.? A bit like French?s old cardie.

I just spoke with my daughter who loved this show before I did... and she has seen the Christmas 2004 show ( and wasn't exactly wild about it ~ maybe it was more risqu? than she likes ).

I remember both specials around last Christmas and New Year. Though I obviously can't speak for anyone other than myself, I'd doubt very much that it was their 'risqu?' overtones which caused them to be less well-received. I enjoyed the first one more than the second. I speak as someone who's always enjoyed the show (fave ep - the radio show where Frank comes out).

The new year episode was focused around Richard Curtis's involvement in the "Stop World Poverty" campaign. A very noble cause, and one which has had my own support for a long time. But rubbing our noses in it at the end of a Christmassy episode of Dibley just felt ... forced.

I'm not saying comedies can't have their moments of drama, or pathos, or introspection. My very favourite comedies down the years have indulged in just this technique. But in this case, it felt really contrived and - quite honestly - put my back up.

Dawn French is still a goddess, though. And the French and Saunders pastiche of Silence of the Lambs remains the best film-skit EVER!

Not so much. I mean, I liked the fact that they explored the idea. And I really liked the utterly plausible characterisations that went with it. And most of all, I really really liked the way Geraldine came to her very sensible conclusions -- that they were both lonely, that she was on the rebound, so on, so forth.

David's such a git, anyway. He doesn't even begin to deserve the Vixter. And with those politics, too ... <shudder>

Joanna Lumley's comic timing and delivery is impeccable. I've loved her as Purdey in the New Avengers, I've worshipped her as Sapphire in the (incredible) Sapphire and Steel.

(Excuse me a moment ... mmmmmm, David McCallum ... okay I'm fine.)

But Ab Fab was such a new lease of life for her. And she definitively proved that her range as an actor is formidable.

I've noted that all the wonderful Comic Strip Presents films have been released as a boxed set. Lots of lovely French, Saunders, Rik and Ade, et al, in there. If you've never seen them, they're well worth getting.

First when they thought Elton John was coming. Reg Dwight sees the sign and the Vicar replies "That's Ben Elton".
Ben Elton Co-Wrote "The Young Ones" which had Jen Saunders and Dawn French in a couple of eppys.

The Vicar in one eppy cracks a joke about the Queen doing a speech, probably written by Ruby Wax.
Ruby Wax does the scripts for Ab Fab, starred in two eppys of Ab Fab and starred in Girls On Top with Saunders and French.
If I can think of anymore (besides the J-O-H-N I-N-M-A-N jokes) I'll let you know !!!

Yes, the "He's so gay he makes John Inman look like Jean Claude Van Dam"
and
David - "I think Hugo is J-O-H-N I-N-M-A-N"
Vicar - "You think Hugo Is John Inman ???? OH !!! You think Hugo Homosexual ????" :lol2:

Just saw the Vicar's new siggy (the pic of Dawn French) ... she's so dishy  Honestly, ever since I started watching Dibley (which was about three or four years ago) I've always thought that Dawn French was quite stunning. Her husband's not so bad either (Lenny Henry from "CHEF!")

Thanks for noticing the change DuranFan! It's a better fit for the board.

I've never seen Chef!
For others that also aren't familiar with it:

Chef! is a British sitcom starring Lenny Henry that aired as 20 episodes over three series from 1993 to 1996 on the BBC.

Henry stars as Gareth Blackstock, the arrogant, tyrannical and driven chef, and later owner, of a gourmet restaurant called Le Chateau Anglais in the English countryside.
Gareth usually treats people, except his wife Janice, but including customers and investors, with contempt and humourously goes into sarcastic tirades when someone especially attracts his ire. One of his favourite targets is his inexperienced sous chef Everton.

The restaurant was modelled on, and many scenes were filmed at, Le Manoir Aux Quatre Saisons, a restaurant in Oxfordshire owned by chef Raymond Blanc.

 Quote: Gareth - "Let me explain the order of things for you. There's the aristocracy, the upper class, middle class, working class, dumb animals, waiters, creeping things, head lice, people who eat packet soup, and then you."

I loved the last eppy but the Comic Relief one wasn't as good as it could have been. I really would have loved to see it end with Gerry having a baby !!

I haven't seen the last eppys, even though vicar is cycling like crazy on my pbs station they (pbs) must not have permission to air the last episodes yet so I am just gonna order the last ones online

Courtesy of my local PBS, I just now have seen the episode where the Vicar has to change a baby's nappy, and that very moment the doorbell rang. So Vicar answers the door and her hands are covered with all this 'brown' stuff.... ewwwwwwwww. ;)

What's more shocking than that is the fact that she lets the baby fall off the counter.

not to mention the person at the door was a representative of child services wasn't it...and she later falls on her face slipping on the feces

this episode is amazing, along with her actual wedding....although I still say Alice and Hugo's wedding was better than Gerrys

Yeah, she was

I agree - Alice and Hugo's wedding was so much better than Geraldine and Harry's - although, my all time favourite episode would have to be the episode 'Happy New Year' - it was funny yet so sad - I still donate to World Vision (I started after viewing that episode)

I loved Gerry's wedding but the one thought that kept sticking in my head was "after this there is no more Vicar" and I think that really ruined it for me.
I really think the show should have ended with Gerry having a baby. It would have been more "rounded" especially with Gerry getting all broody with baby Geraldine.

seeing Gerry Pregnant would have been Hilarious!!! I wish she had had a baby, mainly because if would have been a great catapult watching her go through labor

They could have done so much with that situation, it's a shame they didn't.

Imagine Gerry going into labor early and Owen delivering it??

Gerry going into labor could have been a hilarious situation. Especially her screaming at every man that was present and her telling them how much she hates them.

I love The Vicar of Dibley. I have found with this comedy is that I don't have a favourite character because it is so well written.

My favourite bit though is when she jumps into that puddle. I know its coming but it gets me every time.
