Hello all!

I'm hoping someone can assist me in understanding a few of the words and phrases used on AYBS.

In "Mrs. Solcombe Expects", Miss Brahms & Mrs. Solcombe are talking about the neighbor's cat and the operation. Miss Brahms mentions something about the cat being "ginger." I've also heard that word other places in the series. What does it mean?

Is the word "crumpet" also a slang, by any chance, for getting a piece of, well, you know....?

Also, Mr. Humphries tells Mrs. Solombe that he'll send her down a piece of "fairy cake." What exactly is that? Miss Brahms also said she felt "fairy" in an episode where she dressed up in costume (I think).

Could someone please help me in understading what these are??

Well VYMG

'Ginger' means having red hair-or fur in this case. Ginger toms being big, orangey puddy tats.

Correct....'crumpet' means a spot of....errr, 'how's your father'. :o

and 'fairy' is a name for a fluffy, airy....um.....person of....er, possibly Mr H's sexuality. 'Fairy cake' being a slangy word for a ....ummmmm....gay bloke, who isn't exactly butch.

My, that cleared up a few things, didn't it?

"Ginger" is also slang for being queer. Taking Ginger Beer and then rhyming beer with queer. That's why Humphries reacts the way he does to the word "Ginger".

Fairy also means queer. When Miss Brahams said she was feeling "fairy", it meant she was feeling queer. Over here we would say we're feeling strange because we're possibly getting sick.
Didn't know there were so many different meanings for just 3 little words, huh? :D

:

I don't remember her saying she felt like a fairy in any ep, but I do know she was dressed as a fairy in "Christmas Crackers" and saying she felt like a "right nah-nah" in the outfit. I guess that'd be our equivelent of saying "I feel like an ass dressed like this." I thought she looked cute.

Tids, young Mr. Grace is the one who said that he THOUGHT she said something about feeling "fairy" when she was in costume, NOT I. I was just trying to explain that it had another meaning.

For some odd reason (let's just say it's 5AM) I remember Brahms saying "I feel like a fairy" and Humphries replying "Aren't you the lucky one ???" but for the life of me I can't remember where it's from.....

I bet it's one of the dress-up episodes--"Christmas Crackers"?

She'll probably have said "I feel like a right 'nana." As in short for banana. As in (as you say) feeling silly.

If it helps ...

She does say "Right Nana" but I'm still having a brain fart on the eppy where Brahms says " I feel a right fairy" and Humphries replies with "You should be so lucky" and it's not "Christmas Crackers"... I just watched it... I know, a tough job but someone has to do it !!!! :lol2:

It was "German Week." They just came out in their German clothes for the dance and she mentions feeling "fairy". Then Mr. Humphries says "Aren't you the lucky one."

Hilarious!!

That's partially a "dress-up" episode, so I was semi-partially right.

I watched "German Week" last night and was delighted to see that scene. My brain was hurting too, trying to remember the episode, and suddenly there it was in front of me. Thanks goodness!

Watching Mrs. Slocombe and Cpt. Peacock slap each other during the dance is priceless!

Ah! I was wondering what that "nana" thing was all about. Thanks. 8)
