To makeup for not including Mash and Harmon in the last poll, I've created this poll for just Mash and Harmon.

Let's put 'em in the ring and 'ave 'em duke it out. Vote for your favorite and tell why. :x

I like-um both...

But, Mr. Mash gets my vote... :D

He wasn't one of the sales or bosses..
He was a little rough on the edge and always took-up for the working person...
Mr. Mash didn't mind conflict with a boss...
:P And he liked the ladies...

Mr Harman was in the first episodes that I saw. It was a couple of years before I saw Mr Mash. I thought he was the new guy. A little rude and a little crude, maybe, but he was always true to himself.

I started out a Harmon-ite, but the last couple times I've watched the
whole series, I kinda favored Mash.....going with MASH!

rationale:
Harmon seemed to get a break in that he was INCLUDED in many of the
privy discussions/machinations whilst Mash was always left out.
And while Mr Harmon's speak malfunctions were always funny, they were
a bit out of character with the (I'm gonna use the S word here) Sophistication
he brought to the part. He was just a little to smart to be playing that dumb.

Thanks for the links sonosun. I was able to find the title of the book and a picture of the cover, but I was unable to find it for sale, so thanks.

I always found Mr. Mash funny, but I think that when Harmon joined the show the writing for that character got better. Both characters were good in that they always rose above the rest of the higher class characters. But it seemed that Mash would always do it with a rasberry or crude remark (which is always funny) and that he just seemed to be an instigator (also very funny). But the Harmon character was just smarter comedy. He always rose above the rest of the staff with cunning wit, and went about it with this sort of innocence whereas Mash always looked for trouble.

My favorite line from Mr. Mash ---

"I've come to stick this up Mrs. Slocombe's corsets!!" LOL !!

As for Mr. Harmon, I found him very useful. He single-handedly saved the store in "Takeover" and always found a way to get in an idea or two here and there. He also swiped Mr. Grainger's resignation letter from Young Mr. Grace's "boney little hand" to save Grainger's job. LOL

I like them both, but Harmon got vote.

Ik liked both Mr. Mash and Mr. Harman. But my vote went to Mr. Harman.

In the episode Fifty years on, Peacock and Lucas asked Harman to pay something for the birthday-present for Mrs. Slocombe.

Peacock: "It's Mrs. Slocombes birthday. We are all putting in a pound. What do you say?"

Harman: "I'm not allowed on the floor during working hours (probably the only time Harman remembered this rule)."

Absoluty brilliant. Also (in Oh what a thangled web):

Brahms: "We live in a detached house"

Harman: "That's only the broke down all the houses round it."

it's telling me I already voted in this, and knowing that must have been quite some time ago, I am sure I voted for Mr. Harman.
However, I'd have to agree with many when I say that the more I watch Mr. Mash, the more he grows on me.
I like them both for their own reasons. Mr. Harman was more a part of the group, :gambling: (although he never totally abandoned his "bruvvas," such as the canteen staff)
whereas Mr. Mash had the sharper tongue which really cracked me up.
They both were funny, I'd still probably pick Mr. Harman, but It doesn't make me like Mr. Mash any less. :mashhead:

i honestly like aspects of both of these characters. mash had great one liners and the jokes about mae west, while crass, never failed to make be howl with laughter. but i love how harman got character development that mash never had and how harman became a full fledged member whom the others, even though they refuse to admit it , must havre respected and maybe even liked. i honestly don't know how i could choose

That's one of the things that eventually began to bug me about Mr. Harman. Almost every time he came on, he would start singing.

After a while I got sick of "A rollin' 'round the world, lookin' for the sunshine..."

When he would sing something else, I'd go, "FINALLY!!"

And here I thought I was being clever in making a poll on this very question. I should have known you guys would be one up on me. Dean very kindly pointed out that there was a poll already out there so please ignore mine.

Everyone has their opinion about who was better, few would call it a tie.
I remember that Mash seemed equally at ease bashing the floor staff and the management.
in a classic blue collar vs white collar way. He did like the men's department better than
the ladies. I think he viewed them (the woman) as interlopers.
THen you have Harman. He was more amicable toward the floor staff, and was only really at odds with Peacock, cause he had Rumbold in his back pocket and Mr. Grace too, to a degree. He worked at making himself irreplacable. I started off liking Harman better, but now
find Mash at least as good if not better.

As a union steward IRL, Mr. Mash is a great inspiration to me. ;)

:mashhead:: "Are you suggesting that there's no room for discussion and a helpful exchange of views?"

:rumbhead:: "Precisely. The management stands firm behind its agreement of 1928."

:mashhead:: "Then GET STUFFED!!!"

I have to say this ....

Just watched "Happy Returns" and I cannot express how much I wished Rumbold would have gotton up and smashed Harman in the face when he did that "white collar/blue collar" bit. Then when it got to the birthday lunch and Harman was yelling and banging that spoon, I was hoping that the nurse would have given him a lethal injection of morphine or something.

God I hate that character ....
