I think my favorite characters on this show are Nora Batty and Compo.

Does anyone know for sure if they are filming again this year?

For AYBS? fans that have not yet enjoyed Last of the Summer Wine, you may be happy to see Frank Thornton in the cast!

Another familiar face that I've noted is "Elizabeth" (Hyacinth Bucket's next door neighbor) is also in the series.

I just love it when 'characters' from favorite BritComs show up on the most unexpected of other BritComs, don't you?

However, it's sweet and sour at the same time. (Chinese take-away anyone?) It's lovely to see them in something I am enjoying, but sad to realize they will not be filming any more episodes of their own series again...

The scenery is magnificent. Serene.
It's wonderful to see this show just before retiring for the night.
Better than a glass of warm milk, although I've never had a glass of warm milk. :)

I soooo agree about the village. No wonder Compo wanted to be buried there.

I like Glenda. The only characters that I didn't care for came in to the series after Compo died and they didn't last too long. (Thank goodness! I nearly quit watching the show because of them.)

I find it interesting! She is definitely listed in his bio... I wonder if he is listed in hers? She has an amazing list of characters she has played both on screen and off. I read an interview where she was talking about being in a play with him...but never was it mentioned they were related.

I'm glad to know they are cousins, I just love them both. :)

Ya know, Lucas, I don't either, but we SHOULD! It is an extremely good health practice to drink a glass of wine a day!

I think I will check with the pharmacist and see if I could opt that in with my daily meds...now that I've brought it up and all.

Not often, by my count, at least.
Seems I recall a few of the guys at Norman Clegg's have a glass of wine once. (Maybe after a funeral perhaps?)

Ya know I don't think those pledge drives used to take as much out of the month's regular programming as they are doing now.

My daughter was trying to watch the last installment of 'Miss Marples' last Sunday and it took 3 (or was it 4?) hours to show it!!! How can you enjoy a mystery with so many pledge breaks? :x

I thought it was awful the first couple of times I saw it. Now it's one of my favorites. I think the best episodes are the ones with Michael Bates (as Blamire) in them, which those of us Stateside can only see on DVD.

Frank Thornton has helped to restore some of the Michael Bates feeling to the show, though. Truly's a little pushy and arrogant sometimes, but you still can tell he thinks of Compo and Clegg as his friends instead of his proteges. For a Frank Thornton character, he's really laid-back and likeable.

They down lots of beer in pubs, never wine, and I bet they were drinking whiskey or something stronger on the episode with the funeral.

Liz's character, Ms. Davenport, only appears in the very newest episodes, which your PBS station may or may not have. Being that new, they haven't done a lot with her yet. Probably won't surprise you to hear she's a rather high-strung individual.

Hi Lucas,

I very rarely miss Last of the Summer Wine, and as far as I can remember there has been no send off for either Wesley (Gordon Wharmby) or Edie (Thora Hird) in the programme. In fact, since the programme began in 1972, the only cast member I can remember getting a proper send off was Compo (Bill Owen).

In the UK we have just come to the end of the 2006 series, which remained as entertaining and funny as ever.

You will get to see Josephine Tewson as Miss Davenport more in Last of the Summer Wine as you get the latest episodes. In the 2006 series she was in every episode, mainly based in the library where she works in the show. Her character spends most of her time in conversation with Marina, as they are both single and on the lookout for a boyfriend. There were 3 quite funny episodes where Barry thought Josephine's character had a crush on him, even though she was only teasing him.

I'm glad people still find this show entertaining after 34 years, as I certainly do.

It's your nuts. That's why you can't hear two of the three properly. You stop chewing your nuts out of respect for Frank Thornton, but not the other actors. :hat:

Does anyone know if or when a box set of all the LOTSW will be available?

Not sure if it's a box set but my brother does have dvd's of the early episodes. Where Cleg is still in his 50's and there's still a husband around the tea room helping to run things.

They seem to have made a few eppies on DVD's and on Video.

But, not that many....At least not in the US.

And it seems to be a few here and a few there.

I finally got to see an episode of Last of the Summer Wine.

It seemed reasonably funny to me.

I could take it or leave it, but I course my favorite scenes are all with Frank in those later episodes, and of course Trevor playing golf!

How long has LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE been on the air? Three decades, I think? Bonanza didn't last that long. Law & Order won't last that long. Hell, the Simpsons won't last that long! (And I'm a fan of Law & Order AND the Simpsons.)

Is that a world record for a sitcom?

But, I have known that for a couple of months.

IMDB ...... had them already for 2009.

So I'm not sure why it took the British papers so long to find out. :?

Ps ...... Do you know why Smiler left ???

It could be many reasons including health maybe, or this might hold a clue?

I believe he did in fact withdraw for health reasons, but I can't find anything that says whether this is expected to be permanent. One episode last year had Howard going into Auntie Wainwright's wanting a disguise so he could "vanish completely", and Tom remarked that she had helped Smiler do exactly that, which I thought was a pretty oddly self-referential moment for the series.

I miss Smiler, he was a great character.
It's probably been mentioned elswhere but Jugears was in a recent episode playing a vicar.

Smiler was fantastic, again, so well-played.

It's not even aired here very often; it's a real pity. :(

One of my local PBS stations is moving towards the dramas and cutting back on the Britcoms (though they'll still give me an hour of KUA as well as AYBS at midnight).

The other is so set in its ways and will air the same shows over and over and over...but they are airing classic Dr. Who so I can't complain too much.

No disrespect to LOTSW, I just happen to have most of them on DVD, so I don't mind a nice bit of classic Dr Who on TV!:D

Yes, he plays Foggy (I think, that's the name I saw in the credits last night...I'll double-check it for you).

Brian Murphy plays Alvin Smedley.
Fantastic Actor, and great bloke to talk to
