I do hope her health isn't a hidden reason for her leaving. But 22 years IS a long time to play one role. We couldn't have expected Miss Brahms to have lasted that long! She looks a bit like Dame Judi Dench in that pic, eh?

It's certainly a surprise to me. I thought Wendy would continue in her role as Pauline Fowler as long as Eastenders went on.

I agree. I'm shocked myself. You would figure so many years on a show that you would stick it in till the end.
Good luck Wendy in whatever you choose to do now !!!

There has been "Rumors" of her leaving the show for at least 3 years.

Here is a story I got from elsewhere, I believe it was in "The Sun"....
"Wendy's in a Fowl Mood"

Smoked out ... Wendy has a ciggie on hol after quitting show
EASTENDERS star Wendy Richard cuts a moody figure on holiday just days after quitting the soap.
The veteran actress, 62, who plays miserable Pauline Fowler, smoked a ciggie through a holder and chatted on her mobile as she perched beside a harbour in Malta.
Wendy flew out as news of her shock departure broke, and is said to still be coming to terms with her decision to leave Albert Square after more than 21 years.
She is staying at a ?200-a-night resort with pals including former co-star Letitia Dean, who played Queen Vic landlady Sharon Watts.
But forlorn-looking Wendy has been spending most of her time alone. She has breakfast by herself near the pool before retreating to her room at the five-star hotel which overlooks Sliema harbour.
She was seen going to bed early after drinking white wine and champagne at dinner with Letitia, 38 ? who stayed up boozing with pals.

It's wall over ... Wendy
as soap's Pauline
Friends say Wendy, who has twice battled breast cancer, still hasn?t fully accepted her decision to quit EastEnders.
One added: ?She?s been on the soap a long time so deciding to go has been a massive wrench. It?s not something she?s taken lightly.
?She felt she needed to get away for a few days to have some time to herself to let it sink in.?
Holidaymakers spotted Wendy, who turns 63 in five days, sitting on a wall outside the hotel.
One said: ?I couldn?t believe how frail she seemed, she was barely recognisable from her character.
?We knew she?d left the show but were amazed to see her here.
?My wife pointed her out but I didn?t believe it was her until we walked past.

I would like to wish Wendy all the best for the future, and hope that she continues to act as she is a star performer. I would love her to appear in Last of The Summer Wine too, as it's one of my favourite comedies.

That makes it sound like the decision was made FOR her instead of BY her. Perhaps her exit isn't completely voluntary. :?

I'll say it again...she doesn't look well and I am concerned for her health. I wish she didn't smoke. It's quite "brave" for a cancer patient to be smoking. Smoking increases a woman's risk of breast cancer, so I am disappointed in her choice to do that. Her life...her lungs....
I posted about a year ago that when I was doing a Google search on Wendy I fell upon some people in the Eastenders ng who were quite critical of her recent performances on the show. So maybe her leaving is a mutual decision. She may not be performing up to snuff and she may be not feeling well, to boot.

Some of the scuttlebug I'm getting off certain boards is that it wasn't entirely her decision to leave. Like you said... "a mutual decision".

Last I heard, EastEnders wasn't faring as well in the ratings against the other soaps--Emmerdale and Coronation Street have been trouncing it often. Maybe they're planning to take EastEnders in a new direction by revamping the staff and letting some of the old cast go.
On an unrelated note...Letita Dean is only 38?!? She's been on that show forever--I've have pegged her at mid-40s since it seems like she's hardly left the show since I've been watching it.

I was completely shocked when I read about this. To tell you the truth I had tears in my eyes. I'm going to miss her very much! I just hope that she'll be on another show so I continue to see her lovely face. :)
Wendy has said she hates changes in routine - which makes me think it very unlikely she would voluntarily leave East Enders unles sit is becaise of her health. As we have no reason to think her ill, I think the producers have dumped her. In a way it makes sense - she was the highest paid actor on the show yet her character hadn't been a major part of the storylines for five years or so. That dosnt make much financial sense.
I hope Wendy goes back into comedy - preferably in something new.

i cannot belive she left the show, but after 22 years i would think that she would want to keep going. i hope its not her health because that would be very sad, i couldn't imagine anything happening to wendy, its would be tragic if her health declined, i hope she'll reconsider and return to the show, or at least go onto another series, her talent is to good to waste
